Your are interested in going down the Ardeche river Gorges : we are pleased to
provide you with the main information and some more recommandations which will
allow you to manage this beautiful canoe ride successfully. The Ardeche river
and its Gorges represent a splendid route, classified by a "Arrêté Préfectoral"
- an administrative decision-, on January 14th 1980, under the appellation
"Natural Reserve of the Ardèche river Gorges". This route follows the bottom of
wild cliffs for about thirty kilometers. Eight kilometers after departure, the
river effectively plunges into nature, the road disappears and you only have
"goat trails" to get off the gorges. Along this route, you'll find about 30
small "passes". They aren't falls nor dams, but places where the river runs
faster. The French Canoe Kayak Federation has classified them in classes 1 and 2
, i.e. without big difficulties. For the two day trip, two bivouac zones are
compulsory and scheduled at mid-distance between departure and arrival. Called
"Chateau de Gaud" and "Gournier bivouac", they are drinkable water and first-aid
stuff equiped places. Being able to swim is obligatory to embark on the rented
boats, and wearing the life jackets provided before departure, too.

It is fully recommanded to bring
:
| - cold meals and drinks, as there's no food available along
the route of the Gorges. |
| - sleeping bags,
tents, change of clothes, portable gas stoves for multiday trips. Avoid surplus
stuff that would not go inside containers |
| - garbage bags, to carry your waste on : you'll put them down
when arrived. |
| - tennis or plastic shoes, tightly fitting to your feet, to
be able to walk : Ardèche pebbles are painful ! |
| - hats and sun block cream, if you are sensitive to sun.
Don't forget to have your glasses tied up. |
